How sensor fusion cuts false alarms to near zero

A motion light that cries wolf at every cat is worse than nothing. Here's how combining LiDAR, vision and thermal makes alerts you can trust.

How sensor fusion cuts false alarms to near zero

The fastest way to make someone disable their security system is to wake them at 3am for a moth. False alarms aren't a minor annoyance — they erode trust until people switch the whole thing off. Beating them is mostly an exercise in sensor fusion.

Why single sensors fail

Every sensor has a characteristic failure mode. PIR motion detectors fire on warm air currents and animals. Cameras misread shadows, headlights and rain. Microphones trigger on thunder. Individually, each is noisy. The trick is that they rarely make the same mistake at the same instant.

Agreement is the signal

A raindrop fools the camera but not the LiDAR. A warm gust fools a PIR but not the depth map. When independent sensors agree that a human-sized object is approaching, confidence skyrockets.

How Turova fuses the evidence

  1. 1LiDAR flags a cluster of the right size and distance moving toward the van.
  2. 2The vision model checks whether that region looks like a person.
  3. 3If thermal is fitted, it confirms a warm body at that location.
  4. 4Only when the evidence agrees does the system escalate to an alert.

Crucially, this all happens on the Jetson in real time. There's no round trip to a server, so confirmation adds milliseconds, not seconds — fast enough to trigger a deterrent before someone reaches the door.

Tuning to your world

Context matters too. Park next to a busy footpath and you can draw a detection zone that ignores it while still watching your doorway. Camp deep in the woods and you can raise sensitivity. The models also learn the difference between common wildlife and people, so a curious raccoon stays off your lock screen.

A perfect alarm fires every time it matters and never when it doesn't. Fusion is how you get close.Priya Nair

The payoff is trust: because Turova almost never cries wolf, you actually pay attention when it does speak up.
