How much does an RV security system cost?
From DIY cameras to professionally installed 4D LiDAR — a clear breakdown of what camper van and RV security really costs, and what you actually get at each price.
“How much should I spend?” is the first question most van owners ask about security — and the honest answer is: it depends what you're protecting against. Here's a realistic breakdown of the options, from a phone-app camera to a professionally installed system, so you can spend where it counts.
DIY cameras: $50–$400
A consumer Wi-Fi camera or two is the cheapest entry point. It's fine for a heads-up while you're away from a parked van on shore power — but it leans on the cloud, struggles in the dark, and does nothing when you have no signal. For life off-grid, it's more of a doorbell than a security system.
Motion alarms & sensors: $100–$600
Door/window sensors and PIR motion alarms add a layer, but they only fire once someone is already at the van, and they're notorious for false alarms from wind and wildlife. Useful as a component; not a complete answer on their own.
Professionally installed LiDAR systems: $4,699–$12,699+
This is the category Turova is in. Instead of a single fragile sensor, you get 4D LiDAR, night-vision cameras and on-device AI that work together, off-grid, with the install done for you. Two packages cover most rigs:
- Base — $4,699: one roof-mast 4D LiDAR + 360° camera, fully installed.
- Stealth — $12,699: hidden LiDAR on every side and embedded night cameras, custom-fit to your van.
Turova's prices include expert installation at our Savannah shop and have no required subscription. A cheaper system that needs paid cloud to function — and a day of your own labor to fit — isn't always cheaper. See the full packages and pricing.
Don't forget running costs
Many systems charge monthly for cloud storage or “smart” features. Turova's core detection, deterrents and local recording are free forever; only optional cloud data and environment monitoring are subscriptions. And because the hardware sips power, it won't cost you in battery either — see the power calculations.
So what should you spend?
- 1Parked, on-grid, low-risk: a DIY camera may be enough.
- 2Full-time or off-grid: invest in a system that works with no signal.
- 3Bigger rig or higher value: hidden, all-around coverage pays off.
